Inspiration

Despite claims to being Hobart’s premier park, the Queens Domain has never had a spatial master plan to guide physical improvements. In calling for such a plan, Council sought to unify a diverse history of singular developments; create distinct, high-quality settings within the rich landscape of the site; and make the Domain accessible in ways that had not been realised.

Outcomes

As principle consultants, Inspiring Place brought its rich experience of placemaking and its intimate knowledge of the site gained through consultation, site observation and past projects to bear on the project. Inspiring Place were assisted by Liminal Architecture and Liminal Graphics.

The Queens Domain Master Plan is the most significant plan for the reserve since its vesting with in the Hobart City Council in 1917. Bold in vision, succinctly written, richly illustrated and graphically accessible, the plan provides a focus for Council action to address long-held concerns for presentation and appearance, access, circulation, use and activity. The plan has achieved high praise and agreement about the path forward, generating excitement in Council and the community for its implementation.

Council now has the principles, plans and guidelines they require to enhance the role of the Domain in the civic life of the City. Importantly, the master plan creates a framework that is creative yet respectful of the Domain’s values, expansive in scope yet achievable within the life of the plan and comprehensive in a way that will help make one place of the many.

Recognition

2016 Award of Excellence in Parks and Open Space, Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (Tasmania).

To date, Council and others have invested over $20M in implentation of the recommendations of the Master Plan - clear recognition of the success of the project.
